Wake Boat Buying Guide 2026: Wakeboard & Wake Surf Boats

The right wake boat depends on how you ride. If ropeless surfing is the priority, choose a wake surf boat. It needs inboard power and a capable ballast system to build the wave. If your crew mostly rides on a rope, lean toward a wakeboard boat setup. Most modern wake boats handle both, so crew size, storage and budget usually decide the rest.

What Makes a Wake Boat Different

Wake boats in the wakeboard and ski category generally use inboard engines. Wake surfing requires an inboard-powered hull because it keeps the propeller tucked under the boat, safely away from the rider. That design choice drives much of what you'll see on the showroom floor.

The second defining feature is ballast. Wake surf boats require a ballast system to load the boat and shape the wave. Wake boats in this category typically use ballast to set the size and shape of the wake, whether you're carving behind it on a board or riding its face without a rope.

Most wake boats are built with fiberglass hulls. They typically run from about 20 to 26 feet long.

Wakeboard Boat vs Wake Surf Boat: What Changes

The hull and power basics overlap. What changes is the wake you're chasing and the equipment that helps you build it.

If your household includes both wakeboarders and surfers, look for a crossover boat with adjustable ballast and wave-shaping controls. You won't have to pick a side.

Key Considerations Before You Buy a Wake Boat

Before you compare specific models, sit down with your crew and work through the questions below. Your answers will narrow the field quickly and make your time on the showroom floor far more productive.

Crew Size and Boat Length

Count who's realistically aboard on a typical Saturday, including the friends who always tag along. A longer boat generally means more seating and room for gear. A shorter one is easier to trailer, launch and store.

Where You'll Ride in Tennessee

Our stores sit near lakes including Norris Lake, Percy Priest and Center Hill. Think about how you'll get to the water. Do you need a trailer, a lift or a slip, and will your tow vehicle and ramp access fit the boat you want? Check towing limits with your vehicle manufacturer before you commit.

New vs Pre-Owned

A new boat gets you the latest model-year layout and your choice of options. A pre-owned wake boat can put a higher-tier hull within reach. Either way, ask for the boat's equipment list rather than assuming it matches the brochure. Options vary unit to unit.

Comfort and Audio

Tower speakers and upgraded audio are common on wake boats, either standard or optional. Cockpit heaters are worth a look for Tennessee spring and fall sessions, when the water is great but the air has a bite.

Budget and Financing

Set a total budget that covers insurance, storage, fuel and routine maintenance, not just the purchase price. Our team can walk you through options. Get financing details before you shop so you know where you stand.

How to Choose the Right Wake Boat

  1. Rank your sports. Decide whether surfing, wakeboarding or both matter most. That ranking decides which ballast and wave-shaping features you need.

  2. Size the boat to your crew. Match seating and storage to your real-world group, not your best-case guest list.

  3. Confirm logistics. Check your tow vehicle, storage plan and lake access before you narrow the list.

  4. Compare boats in person. Sit in the helm, walk the swim platform and look at board storage. Layout differences show up fast in person.

  5. Plan for ownership. Ask how winterization and routine upkeep work with our service team. That way your boat is ready when the season opens.
