Fall Supra Boat Prep Checklist for Tennessee
Your Supra Is Ready for Fall—Is It Ready for Winter?
Fall on Tennessee lakes is a reward for every boater who sticks around past Labor Day. Boat traffic drops, water temperatures stay surf-worthy well into September, and East Tennessee reservoirs like Norris Lake show early foliage color that no summer crowd ever sees. But every fall session that ends without the right prep is one freeze cycle closer to a costly engine repair. Run through this checklist before you cover your Supra for the season.
Engine and Cooling System
Flush the engine with fresh water to clear any lake sediment or mineral buildup from the cooling passages.
Change the engine oil and filter before storage, not in spring — used oil contains acids that corrode engine internals during long sits.
Inspect and replace the impeller if it shows cracking, missing vanes, or wear. A failed impeller on the first run of next season can mean an overheated engine within minutes.
Fog the cylinders with engine fogging oil to coat internal surfaces and prevent corrosion through winter.
Inspect all belts and hoses for cracks or soft spots and note anything that needs attention before the next season.
Tennessee lake regions can experience freezing temperatures in late fall and winter. A fully drained and fogged engine is the single most important step in this checklist.
Ballast System and Bilge
Drain every ballast tank and ballast bag completely. Any water left in the system can freeze, expand, and crack fittings or bags.
Run the ballast pumps briefly after draining to clear residual water from the lines.
Drain and dry the bilge thoroughly. Standing water in the bilge over winter invites mold, odors, and — if temperatures drop far enough — freeze damage to the hull liner.
Fuel System
Add fuel stabilizer to the tank and run the engine for several minutes to distribute it through the fuel system. Untreated fuel degrades over a storage period and can gum up injectors or carburetors.
Top off the tank if your Supra will sit for several months. A full tank reduces the condensation that forms on interior tank walls.
Tower, Electronics, and Accessories
Remove tower accessories — mirrors, surf racks, board racks — and store them indoors. UV exposure and winter moisture accelerate fading and corrosion on hardware.
Inspect tower speakers and wipe them down before storage; if they are removable, bring them inside.
Check all navigation and courtesy lights for burned bulbs or cracked lenses and replace as needed.
Inspect the stereo and electronics for any moisture intrusion. Leave nothing loose in the boat that wind or animals could disturb.
Battery
Disconnect the battery or connect a quality trickle charger. A battery left to fully discharge over winter may not hold a charge in spring.
Clean the battery terminals to remove any corrosion before reconnecting or storing.
Hull, Steering, and Exterior
Wash and inspect the hull for chips, stress cracks, or gelcoat damage. Fall is the right time to schedule repairs so the boat is ready come spring — not sitting in the shop when the water opens back up.
Lubricate steering components per your owner's manual. Dry or corroded steering is a safety issue on the first run of the season.
Inspect the trailer — lights, bearings, bunks, and safety chains — and address anything worn.
Cover and Storage
Install a quality, properly fitted boat cover. A loose cover that flaps in winter wind does more harm than good, trapping moisture and abrading the finish.
Store the boat with the bow elevated slightly so any water that does get under the cover drains toward the stern and out.
Choose a storage location that stays dry and, ideally, out of direct sunlight to protect your upholstery and gelcoat through the off-season.
